Sarapiqui Riverboat Tour
This riverboat tour adventure was actually one of our first excursions while in Costa Rica. We all got up really early and traveled to the Sarapiqui River, which if I remember correctly was about two hours away, so that we could go on a riverboat tour. It was pouring rain and all 60 of us separated into three different boats with guides who pointed out all of the different animals as we passed them. These guides were obviously very experienced because they could spot all the animals within seconds of the boat pulling up to them. Some of these birds or monkeys were hard for us to even make out after searching for them when we knew where they were. The picture on the left is one of the boats and I'm not sure if you can tell from this picture but it was really raining! Luckily we were all told in advance about the rain and we were prepared. During the time we were there, there was severe flooding in this area so the water was a lot hi
gher than it usually is during January. The animals we mainly saw on this trip were monkeys, iguanas, birds, and bats. The picture on the right is hard to make out because they are very small and the picture is kind of blurry, but these are in fact bats! We were in shock when our guide told us because they are so small and just look like little dots on the tree.
After the tour we were brought back to the tour center and were served a snack which we could eat while relaxing in one of the many hammocks they had set up all around the area. Another thing they had was a small walking tour set up where we went into a caged in area filled with different types of flowers and butterflies. In addition, we got to check out some poisonous frogs which only the natives who worked there could touch. There is a picture of the green one below. They look so cute and harmless and I would have never imagined them to be poisonous if I wasn't told by the guide!

I don't think I have ever seen as much rain as I did that day. But the tour was still really neat. Those bats were crazy, I kept looking and looking for these things like 5 times that size until I finally realized how small they were. Did you get to see that one "Jesus Crista" animal that could run across the water? Unfortunately I missed seeing it and a cayman. And yea it was really hard to see the animals even when we knew where they were. I would just take some pics in the general area and then when I put them on my computer I looked forever and still couldn't find them. We were lucky to get out of there before the rains from hell came though. It was crazy to hear that the got more rain on that day than they expected all month. Keep up the good posts!!

The river boat tour sounds really cool. I bet it was not as much fun as it could have been if it had not been raining! That’s crazy that the guides can spot animals like that, I definitely would have thought that those dots on the tree were just weird spots in the bark not actual bats! Also it is cool that you guys got to experience wildlife like the flowers and butterflies. Were the flowers really colorful and exotic? And you were right about how cute the frogs were, but I have heard the more colorful the frog, the more poisonous the frog is!

It seems like you guys were in this awesome jungle! I would have loved to go on this riverboat, but it the rain probably put a sore on the experience. I definitely would have never thought that those tiny dots on the tree were bats. Who knew! Do you know what kind of bats they are or are they just baby bats? I would have loved to see all the animals that you did see, especially the monkeys. The butterfies and the flowers seem very interesting as well. Did you have someone talk about the wildlife or did everybody just walk around themselves? The picture of the frog really does look cute. Even though they are cute, I don't think I would touch them, even if they weren't poisonous!
